The husband of the Republican congressional candidate for Georgia’s 6th District, Karen Handel, shared an image on Twitter that read, “free the black slaves from the Democratic plantation.”
Steve Handel, Karen’s husband, has since deleted the tweet, and the shared image has been deleted, as well. The screenshots, however, remain:
Calling on voters to fill out absentee ballots for his wife, the image read “Handel will fight for minorities to excel” before going on to read:
“Criticizing black kids for obeying the law, studying in school, and being ambitious as ‘acting white’ is a trick Democrats play on Black people to keep them poor, ignorant, and dependent. Free the black slaves from the Democratic plantation.”
Handel’s tone-deaf image, which essentially claims that black people, in general, are “poor, ignorant, and dependent,” is sure to alienate more minority voters than attract them. As Jon Ossoff, her Democratic challenger, continues to hold his ground in this traditionally conservative district, Handel’s actions can only hurt the Republican candidate’s campaign as the June 20th runoff nears.
