It is important that we still have dissenting voices to oppose President Trump’s rhetoric and policies, and that those voices do so in a clear-eyed, well-spoken, calm way that also shows an absolute difference in temperament and cognitive capacity compared to Trump. In a new interview with CNN, that person is former Vice President Joe Biden, who, in addition to the above qualities, always seems to maintain warmth and a sense of humor. Biden spoke in an extended interview with Chris Cuomo on CNN and ended up calling Trump “a joke”, saying “He’s a joke..Look,.. I think he understands, I think the people around him understand. What presidents say matters…It’s just amazing, the outrageous, the inaccurate things the president says.”
Biden’s comments calling Trump a joke came after Cuomo said that Republicans felt Democrats couldn’t take a joke, that Trump was joking when he said in a speech in Ohio that Democrats who didn’t stand up and clap for him were unpatriotic and perhaps even treasonous. It was then that Biden said it was Trump who is the joke because it matters what presidents say and what Trump says is so often “outrageous” and “inaccurate”.
Biden also spoke about Trump’s attacks on the FBI and Justice Department from the perspective of someone who has been involved in Washington politics since the 1970’s. Biden said, “I’ve been here for eight presidencies. This is the first president to make a full-throated unvarnished attack on the entirety of the FBI – not going after Hoover who was one person in the FBI – this is to discredit the FBI and discredit his own justice department. You know look I spend a lot of time traveling around the world. What do you think they’re thinking in Moscow? This is doing everything that Putin ever wanted whether not our justice system is fair so in doubt about whether or not there is anything that’s remotely consistent with our constitution. It’s just it’s a disaster.”

Biden also spoke of President Trump’s predicament in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. Biden said that if he were one of Trump’s lawyers, he’d advise Trump not to speak to Mueller, because Trump “has difficulties with precision”, meaning it would be next to impossible for Trump to confine himself to the truth, even if he wanted to do so. Cuomo laughed at Biden’s comment that Trump has “difficulties with precision”, saying, “That’s one of the most subtle things I’ve ever heard you say, Joe Biden.”
Biden also insisted that we have to get away from the nationalism Trump advocates, saying, “I know one thing. We have to reclaim the essence of who we are as a country. We have to just get rid of this dangerous, in terms of our security, dangerous notion of nationalism. We’ve got to get rid of this phony populism, that is just creating space for people to grab power.”+
Biden is certainly right that we do need to “reclaim the essence of who we are as a country”. We do not have to be defined by a president who does not represent our values, our beliefs, or our democracy. We will have important chances to use our votes to reclaim our federal government in the midterm elections this November, as well as the presidential election in November 2020. Joe Biden’s name may be on that ballot in 2020 as the Democratic candidate for president – we’ll have to wait and see.
